Research Administration Program for Training and Resources (RAPTR) & Community of Research Administrators (CoRA)

CoRA

Members of CoRA fill various research administration and related roles around Grounds: pre-award, post-award, contracting, compliance, and more. CoRA meets monthly (via Zoom) to network, learn more about the processes and policies that impact your work, and get to know the people in offices across Grounds that intersect with your researchers' portfolios.

The CoRA Steering Committee is a revolving group of 4-6 volunteers from the major Schools and other areas who serve 6-month appointments to plan and host the meetings. CoRA also maintains an active listserv (cora@virginia.edu).

RAPTR

RAPTR is an institutional partnership of stakeholders and research administration-focused units with the goal of increasing the knowledge base of the research administration workforce. RAPTR was created by colleagues in the School of Medicine and is supported by iTHRIV and its NIH-funded CTSA award.

RAPTR Office Hours and CoRA Follow-Up

These open-forum discussions and Q&A sessions take place on the first Wednesday of the month. On the third Wednesday, RAPTR meets to continue the CoRA discussion and provide additional Office Hours.

Research Administration Mentoring Program and University Partnership (RAMP UP)

RAPTR, supported by iTHRIV, offers RAMP UP UVA—a one-year program that provides professional development for Research Administrators through mentoring and workshops.

Research Administrators Forum (RAF)

This semiannual professional forum brings the UVA research administration community together with the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) and OSP to discuss sponsor updates and university initiatives. In-person attendance also provides opportunities to network and collaborate with colleagues across Grounds.

National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) is a non-profit professional society dedicated to advancing the profession of research administration through education and professional development programs, the sharing of knowledge and experiences, and the fostering of a diverse, collegial, and respected global community. 

SRAI

The Society of Research Administrators International (SRAI) is the premier global research management society providing education, professional development and the latest comprehensive information about research management to professionals from over 40 countries.

SRAI hosts Chapters that serve as local outposts, including the SRAI Virginia Chapter

The Research Administration Discussion List focuses on research grant administration, featuring such topics as grant funding, grant submission, regulatory compliance, project budgeting, educational opportunities, and technology. They also host an archive

COGR

The Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) provides a unified voice for U.S. research universities, affiliated medical centers, and independent research institutions. Through expertise and advocacy, COGR works to strengthen the research partnership between the federal government and research institutions and further the frontiers of science, technology, and knowledge by advocating for effective and efficient research regulation and policy. 

All employees of member institutions can request access to the COGR Member Portal, subscribe to the listserv, and gain access to members only resources, including the job board and directory. 

eRA Commons

eRA Commons provides a platform for grant applicants, grant recipients, and ederal staff at NIH and other grantor agencies to share administrative information related to research grants. Be sure to check the webpage for news and events and subscribe to the listserv to receives updates on the NIH Electronic Submission program and eRA Commons. 

FDP

The Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) is an association of federal agencies, research policy organizations, and academic research institutions with administrative, faculty, and technical representation. FDP's mission is to streamline administration of federally sponsored research and create resources widely available regardless of membership status. Additionally, they offer a mailing list with multiple topic-based listservs from which to choose. 

Grants.gov

Grants.gov offers tools to review and apply for over 1,000 federal grant programs. Federal grant-making agencies also use the system to vet applications. If you navigate to the Grant Community Blog, you'll find information and resources, such as the events calendar

NIH and NSF Updates

National Institutes of Health (NIH)

As the largest biomedical research agency in the world, NIH is part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and responsible for biomedical and public health research. NIH offers various methods to receive updates, including Grants & Funding, News & Events, and Open Mike, the blog published by Mike Lauer, NIH Deputy Director of Extramural Research. 

NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Wellfare (OLAW) hosts a listserve. To subscribe:

  • Email listserv@list.nih.gov.
  • Include the following in body of the message: Subscribe to OLAW-L [your name].

National Science Foundation (NSF)

NSF was established to promote the progress of science; advance the national health, prosperity, and wellfare; and secure the national defense. You can subscribe to receive NSF email updates

UIDP

The University-Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP) is a solutions-oriented organization whose members identify issues impacting university-industry, or U-I, relations and opportunities to development new approaches to collaboration. 

As a UVA employee, you can sign up for the UIDP listserv using your UVA email address. 

The VPR Training Team develops and brings together educational programs and resources from across Grounds to create one place for faculty, researchers, and administrators to find the training they need.

Coordinated by the Sponsored Programs Research Navigator, OSP Communications support UVA research administration by curating and disseminating critical information to the field via emails, newsletters, and the website.

Workday RAD consists of centrally located reporting apps developed by University Business Intelligence. There is a separate app for Administrators and PIs.
