With the 2024 Uniform Guidance updates and recent discussion around NIH's proposed 15% indirect cost funding cap, it is vital for people to understand what Facilities and Administrative (F&A) costs cover and how it undergirds and supports the research enterprise.

F&A costs, also known as indirect costs or overhead, are the costs incurred for common or joint objectives and therefore cannot be identified readily and specifically with a particular grant. F&A pays for the infrastructure and support—including research administration—required to make research happen.
