The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) eRA Commons is not currently permitting automatic approval of first-time no-cost extension (NCE) requests; however, we can still request NCEs via the Prior Approval module. 

Prior Approval NCE requests require additional documentation (e.g., brief progress report, budget, justification/request letter); therefore, we urge anyone seeking an NCE to submit the request at least 30 days before the grant end date.

Keep in mind, Prior Approval NCEs are not guaranteed or considered approved until receipt of a revised Notice of Award (NOA), so please also consider submitting an internal At-Risk Extension request. Additionally, given the uncertainty of funding availability, we strongly encourage a cautious spending approach for all At-Risk accounts.
